(Working Title) Interpreting the Scriptures: The Gospels and Jewish Fiction Writing

Why were the Gospels written?  Are they a representation of historical memory or are they better described as literary narratives with chosen plot points and eponymously-named characters?  Were they written as biographies or fiction novels?  Did they elaborate a tale about a real historical figure or were they inventing an edifying character who symbolized something to a particular Jewish movement?  Who wrote the Gospels: Were they educated peasant followers of Jesus or were they part of an elite scribal class who were notorious for writing fiction? These are the foundational questions asked and answered in Rook Hawkins’ upcoming book.
